| vo.4 Is a real hook grip the slice grip??? There are roughly two types of grips, which are the strong grip (strong position) and the weak grip (weak position). The strong grip is the one that your left hand is covering, and the weak grip is the one that the back of your hand is pointing toward the target. The weak grip also has been called the square grip until recently. In Japan, it may sound more familiar if called 'hook grip' instead of the strong grip, and 'slice grip' instead of the weak grip. Who started to say such things!!! Why am I upset? The strong grip is actually suited for fading, because it is hard to rotate your arms (the arm rotation) with it when you swing by using your whole body. There are many players, such as Toru Taniguchi and Hiroyuki Fujita, who fade the ball with the strong grip. On the other hand, it is easy to rotate your arms and to draw the ball with the weak grip. The real hook grip is the weak grip. Who is saying that the strong grip works better to hook? Of course it works, if you pull your lower back that much. |
